Year 4- So much learning to share

250255009Year 4 have had a very busy term of creative learning this term so far.

Wow Opener- Team ‘Treasure Seekers’

It all started when we became archaeologists for the day as part of team ‘Treasure Seekers’. We split into two teams for two very exciting tasks. Challenge 1 was to find, and dig up, hidden artefacts. We thought about what these artefacts might have been used for and what they can tell us about way people lived at a certain time in history. Challenge 2 was to choose a mixture of organic and non-organic objects and to bury them deep in the soil. We made predictions about how these objects might change over time. We will dig them all up at the end of the topic to see if our predictions were correct! We can’t wait!

Serving the Community

In our learning about Sikhism, we have been thinking about how helping the community is a very important part of the religion. This got us thinking about how we could help the school community of St John’s. So, off we went on a mission to help with sharpening, tidying our fantastic library, emptying recycling bins and sweeping outside. We were very tired by the end of the day, but it felt great to have helped others! After having looked at the role of symbolism in religion, we then decided to make our own class flag made up of symbols which represent helping the community. This flag now takes pride of place in 4T, to remind us how important it is to care for others and to try our best to help wherever we can.

In Science we have been investigating tooth decay. We created a simple test in which we left three eggs in three different liquids for three days, to see what effect this had on each egg shell. The egg shell was the closest material to human teeth that we could think of. We found that the egg shell in the vinegar had almost completely dissolved because of the acidity of the liquid. Although we all really enjoyed the investigation, we were glad to have the vinegar smell out of our classroom!

We have also been learning about the human digestive system which has been very enlightening! We had great fun imagining we had been shrunk and swallowed by mistake! This gave us the idea to write an adventure story all about our journey through the digestive system. Miss Taylor was very impressed with the stories we wrote.

We look forward to telling you all about more of our creative learning in our next post!
